ON SEMI-PERMANENT HIATUS?

Ron Howard and his team at Imagine had been working on a way to adapt the Stephen King novels into filmed entertainment for several months. We began pre-production here in New York in early February of 2011, with a proposed start of production in September.

On May 6th, we were put on hiatus while Ron Howard, Akiva Goldsman and Universal Pictures tried to come to an agreement on the scope and budget for this project. As had been reported, the plan was to turn the books into 3 theatrical feature films, and 3 television mini-series.

By the end of May it appeared that the production team had made the cuts that Universal required, but in the end the studio decided to suspend production. Howard says that he has not given up on the project, but it appears that it will be at least a year before he can will be able to revisit the King movie.
