UNPRODUCED PROJECTS: Hennigan's House
The unproduced projects I've worked on have been really interesting, and it's a shame that not one of them came close.
HENNIGAN'S HOUSE was a children's TV show proposal about a slightly nutty sea captain who lives in a very unique house boat. The boat is docked at an island somewhere in the Pacific, and her captain (Mr. Hennigan) spends his days taking care of children.
Along with learning about boats, and other lessons, Captain Hennigan takes the kids on amazing adventures as his ship takes off for places unknown.
The boat went through a long design process. Shown here are a few of the dozens of drawings and plans I did. I was struggling to find an inspiration for the design that was a good mix of cartoon, reality and humor. At some point I realized that the old Max Fleischer POPEYE cartoons had just the mix of styles I was looking for. Below are a couple of frames from these great cartoons. At left is one of the final boat sketches that I think captures the style.
