SCENIC DESIGN: The New Theatre: CAMELOT
<PREVIOUS PAGE | TOP OF PAGE | NEXT PAGE>
Having said what a wonderful place the New Theatre is, I have to say that it has it's difficulties as well. The stage is a thrust stuck onto the front of a modified proscenium. There is no wing space to speak of, and there are minimal flylines. But there is a huge turntable and I actually loved the challenges presented by the space.

Given the kind of shows they normally did, the set designs almost always ended up being realistic. It's a tough thing to design a set meant for a proscenium, but also make sure the people sitting off on the sides have as good an experience as those in the center. I think that I accomplished that most of the time.

CAMELOT gave me the opportunity to do something really stylized. In this case I used the painter Gustav Klimt as my inspiration.
